FIFA is under major scrutiny right now. With heavy allegations weighing down the organization, it's no wonder that there wasn't a big time bidding war over the location this year. So how did it end up in Canada's hands? You could say, no one else wanted it. Per Canada's Soccer president Victor Montagliani. "With all due respect, we were pretty much the only country that wanted it," he told Rick Cluff on CBC Radio One's The Early Edition.
I am very curious to see what the turn out of attendance will be. My bet will be on the same, or perhaps just a little less than usual. If you look at the history of sports organization scandals, it all seems to be the same. You have a huge group of people who bark over what is happening in the front office. While on the other hand you have the same people who just want to see the games.
If I were a big soccer fan and I was planning on going to the game, I would definitely still go. When it comes down to the starting bell of the game, all of the paperwork and scandals mean nothing.
Yeah I tend to compartmentalize the matches and players from the organization that coordinates them too. It's not the player's fault when there's corruption within the top ranks, or whatever dealings. They are just there to play soccer.
Some say it's hypocritical to be against FIFA, but still watch all the same. I disagree. If I could make it up to Canada, I would. Looks like I'll be watching from Fox Sports online though instead. HD feed; I'm cool with that.
