Daytona 500 Qualifiers Infuriated At New Format Decisions

Jeff Gordon just won the first ever group qualifying session for the Daytona 500. After which a majority of the other drivers were very angry with the All except for 2nd place, Jimmie Johnson. No doubt because who would complain about 2nd place in a new format? Gordon had said, ?"This year, with this qualifying format, the driver finally gets to play a role,". Johnson dad also said just after his lap, "It was good enough for second. "Very interesting qualifying session to say the least."

Now even though the two top guys were pleased with their times, here's what others had to say via Twitter

    Denny Hamlin
"Mayhem. There's no other word to describe it,"

    Tony Stewart
"Today use to be about showcasing the hard work from the teams over the winter. Now it a complete embarrassment for our series."

    Kenny Wallace
"I will say "This is eXciting" maybe craZy or silly or stupid BUT it is a SHOW"

Tony Stewart replied to Wallace with this:
"that's not a show, it's a joke and you know it"

    Brad Keselowski
"Today is one of those days where it Doesn't matter what I think."

I agree with the drivers. This format just doesn't work now. It seems like a stretch for more ratings. Though I highly doubt that will work.

Interesting. So what's so different about the format that it has everyone annoyed?

Sorry, I guess that would help. The change is it now (at least this year) is using group qualifying instead of single-car qualifying format for 2015. The top two starting positions will be determined through the group qualifying format. So instead of the drivers getting to use all of their attention on an empty road and fastest lap, they now also have to pay attention to every other driver on the track. Some drivers were saying it bothers them so much because they're team has worked for months to get the cars in amazing shape mechanically and aesthetically. Now they're work is ruined. At least for that car. Also some are saying it feels as if it's just a blatant reach for more tv time/viewers. Which looks bad on them.

Oh. That sucks. That's one of the cooler parts of racing to me. The single car qualifier. One of my favorite scenes from Days of Thunder was the qualifier. Why in the world would they change it?

Oh good ole Days of Thunder... I feel the same. Actually my favorite is watching a single car on the track too. Too many cars makes it look congested and looks like they're moving slower(ish).
