Why in the world did Eli Manning get benched for Geno Smith?

Eli has never missed a game since he became the starter in 2004. That's 210 straight games in a row. He's won 2 super bowls. He's arguably a hall of famer. But his team has been awful this year. And Eli has not been a top flight QB in the league for probably the last 3-5 seasons.

Even still, is that enough to bench him?

Let's look at the facts. First off, this benching comes at a very curious and odd time. 5 weeks to go in the season. Zero chance at any playoff run. Why make the move now? IF the argument is to see what their other QBs can do, then why start Geno Smith? Smith is not even a medicore NFL starter, as evidenced by what he did with the Jets. This would make a lot more sense if they benched him in favor of rookie QB Davis Webb. But that didn't happen. They have said that Webb will get a chance to play in the last 5 games, but why even bother with Smith over Manning at all?

A few more things to consider.. the Giants lost their 2 top wide receivers just a few games into the season. Odell Beckham is out for the season. Brandon Marshall is out as well. Sherling Shepard has missed 5 games. In reality, Manning only had his full compliment of really good WRs for 2-3 games max, as Beckham was out for the first few games of the season. So their offense has been decimated by injuries likely worse than most any other team in the league (with maybe only Houston and Arizona able to make a similar claim).

So why now? Coach Ben McAdoo's curious and controversial decision has got a lot of pushback from pundits, the league in general, and even doesn't really seem to have much support from his GM, who can't say for sure that Ben's job is secure. And while McAdoo likely had the full support of his locker room before this call, he might have just lost everyone, maybe for good.

The Giants are not a good team this year. They also just lost star cornerback Janoris Jenkins for the season. So their defense also sucks. Why not ride out the season with Manning and move on from him with a high draft picked QB next season? Why now? Is there any logic to this decision whatsoever? Looking into it, I see none.

Here's Eli reaction to the benching:

At least he was offered the chance to start.. after the dust settled on this controversy it seems like McAdoo did an okay job with this benching. Though the one problem I have and agree here is why go with Geno? I'd much rather them just skip Smith and go right to Webb, to see what he is capable of.

Eli Manning gets QB job back after Ben McAdoo, Jerry Reese fired

Wow. Eli gets benched. Sort of. Then they play one game. Basically the next day the head coach and the GM are fired. And now Eli has his job back. What exactly just happened with the Giants??

This is like something right out of a movie. Seems like someone did some sort of shady deal to get one over on McAdoo and Reese.

Either way, do you think these changes are going to do any good? I'm not too familiar with the Giant's coaching.
