In a season that was lost months ago, the Ottawa Senators, the worst team in the NHL, have fired coach Guy Boucher, the team announced Friday. Assistant coach Marc Crawford was named as the team's interim coach. The Senators (22-37-5) dealt their three leading goal-scorers at the trade deadline, sending Matt Duchene and Ryan Dzingel to the Columbus Blue Jackets and Mark Stone to the Vegas Golden Knights.
After 1,179 NHL games, Ottawa Senators defenseman Chris Phillips, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1996 draft, has announced his retirement.
It’s going to take another team effort for the Sens to get back to the postseason, but a lot of that starts with Erik Karlsson and how well he can lead the defensive effort in Ottawa. The Senators are not going to be a team that survives a shootout, more often than not, and they’re going to stay in things with a strong defensive effort. That’s where Karlsson plays a key role, as he’s the leader on that side of the ice and is someone who can help take pressure off of whoever Dave Cameron throws in net.
