Been following the Tour de France for a few years now. I think this year seems to be having a higher than normal amount of crashes. To the point where I thought I would compile them here:
Stage 1:Tour de France 2018: Chris Froome crashes in Stage 1
Stage 2:Tour de France 2018: Crash causes chaos just before Stage 2 finish
Stage 4:Tour de France 2018: Huge peloton crash in final moments of Stage 4Crash within the bunch - Stage 4 - Tour de France 2018
Stage 5:Crash within the bush - Stage 5 - Tour de France 2018
Stage 8:Crash in the peloton - Stage 8 - Tour de France 2018
Stage 9:Tour de France 2018: Chris Froome crashes on cobblestone in Stage 9Landa crashes! - Stage 9 - Tour de France 2018Groenewegen crashes! - Stage 9 - Tour de France 2018Bernal crashes in the peloton ! - Stage 9 - Tour de France 2018Crash in the peloton, Richie Porte quits - Stage 9 - Tour de France 2018
As you can see only a few stages so far that don't have notable crashes. Though they might exist and I just didn't see the videos for them. That's just from NBC Sports and the official Tour de France youtube pages.
Some of these are minor. A few major crashes. But we are not even through the halfway point and already about a dozen crashes. Is this normal?
I remember there being a ton of crashes last year too. I also think I heard something about the largest ever crash/pile up from laster year as well.
These guys are crazy. It's already pretty scary getting into a bike crash anyway, but the risk skyrockets when you take into account all the other racers, terrain, weather, etc.
Defnitely a common thing. What I just found out is they are able to doctor riders as the race is still going on...
Add another to the list. This one hurt to watch:
Philippe Gilbert crashes ! - Stage 16 - Tour de France 2018
