NFL Preseason Injuries

It seems the NFL preseason has become something of a net negative for the league: nobody really cares to watch a vast majority of these games, outside of maybe the first drive when some of the starters play. But on the flip side, usually the biggest news we get from the preseason is injuries.

As a Cowboy's fan, I can attest to this frustration: Tony Romo a few years back.. granted it all turned out good with Dak. But still. It's really not fun to watch a star player (or shiny new highly drafted player with lots of potential) go down in a meaningless game and be declared out for the season, before the season even starts.

This year, our first big name off the board is Derrius Guice, Washington's 2nd round draft pick that was seemingly set to be their bell cow running back for 2018. He is now out for the year with a torn ACL.

That was really unfortunate news for me, as I was excited to see if he could live up to the hype; even being a Cowboy's fan, I like when the division is strong. For the Redskins, this isn't killer news as they have good running backs to replace him already. But it's not good.

Biggest injuries of NFL preseason: Star receivers on the mend. ESPN has compiled the injury news from just the first week of preseason action and the list is pretty long. Not many out for the season, but dozens now are day to day or out for a week or two.

    Other notable injuries so far:

Marlon Mack, Colts RB. Hamstring injury. Out indefinitely.
Doug Baldwin, Seahawks WR. Knee issue. Out for probably the rest of the preseason.
Jason Verrett, Chargers CB. Torn achilles. Out for the season.
Jake Ryan, Packers LB. Torn ACL. Out for the season.
Johnathan Cyprien, Titans safety. Torn ACL. Out for the season.

Not sure if anything can be done to mitigate this issue. You could make the argument the preseason should be canceled to avoid this. But football is rough and injuries happen. It just sucks when they happen in meaningless games.

Yep. This is a huge downside to the preseason. Being a Packer's fan myself, I'm just terrified to see Rodgers play any time he doesn't have to. The guy is like a magnet for season-ending injuries, or several week injuries. Either way, it sucks. Isn't it normal for QBs and star players to mostly sit out the preseason? Why isn't that adopted more?

It is normal, yeah. Usually they will only play for a series or two just at the start of the preseason game, to get some real game time practice, as the only other practice they can get before the start of the season is against their own defense. And typically that's not really enough to get good practice in, come the start of the actual season.

There is one preseason week where the starters typically play the whole first quarter or even the first half. I think it's the game just before the last week of preseason. That's where its the most risky.

Mostly the preseason is for players auditioning to make the team. 2nd and 3rd and 4th stringers. Its evaluation time even more so than practice. I'd opt to sit all of my franchise players if I were the coach. But then again, if they get zero action and hurt themselves on play one of the real NFL season, people will be saying it's because they didn't get any preseason action. So... tough call.

Just lost Marqise Lee for the season --

Marqise Lee will undergo season-ending knee surgery

With the Jags sending Allen Robinson to the Bears and Allen Hurns to the Cowboys, they are kind of in a tough spot now. They will have to rely on sophomore receivers Keelan Cole and Dede Westbrook to get the job done. They also signed Donte Moncrief in the off season. He shows promise.

Dede Westbrook might break out this year due to Lee, Hurns and Robinson all out of the picture. He had several flashes late last season.

Jerick McKinnon suffers torn ACL in 49ers practice

This wasn't even in a preseason game, just in preseason practice. Really sucks for the 49ers as they ponied up a huge contract for this guy. I was really looking forward to seeing what he could do as the clear #1.

Just read they signed Alfred Morris to the squad. So looks like Morris and Breida will be getting all the work unless they go out and sign someone else last minute.

This is obviously really bad for McKinnon, but man.... the 49ers just can't catch a break. And as you said above, it'd be really cool to see what they can do if they actually had a solid QB that was able to play for an entire season. I wonder what their season would have looked like if this wouldn't have happened.
