Super Bowl Beer Commercials

Beer and Super Bowl ads are basically synonymous at this point. Every Super Bowl it seems 10-25% of all ads for the game are from beer brands and companies, either running PSAs, really funny spots, trying to get all emotional with puppies and whatnot, or celebrating how few calories their beer has.

There are actually get this - 282 Super Bowl ads from beer brands since 1980, and counting!

Anheuser-Busch (who is responsible for 242 of those 282 beer ads, and counting) is flooding Super Bowl 53 with a record-breaking 5 and half minutes of very expensive air time, totaling 8 super bowl commercials (compared to the 6 ads and 3.5 minutes of air time they bought for Super Bowl 52). That's the most they have ever done, and they are usually the front runner in all Super Bowls for beer ads.

In fact outside of just a few wine ads and one Beer Institute PSA ad from 2006, you have to go all the way back to 2005 before another company ran ANY Super Bowl beer ads, with the likes of Heineken and Miller Lite.

Budweiser, Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, Stella Artois and Bon & Viv SpikedSeltzer will all be showcased. (Those are all brands of Anheuser-Busch.) Bud Light gets 2 spots. Budweiser, 2 as well. And the same for Michelob Ultra.

We got a really good Bud Light - The Bud Knight commercial last time around that kick started a really entertaining Dilly Dilly! ad campaign that's stretched over a full year, and I'm sure we will see a new twist on it this year. So looking forward to that.

How do you feel about beer and Super Bowl ads being so tightly linked? Does it bother you at all or do you look forward to what these beer brands come up with year to year?

Last question, what's your favorite (or least favorite) Super Bowl beer commercial ever?

Budweiser - Wind Never Felt Better - Super Bowl Commercial (2019)

I am impressed by this ad. This one will air during the game, but apparently 15 seconds shorter. So this is the extended version. Really like the cinematography.

As for favorite beer ads... it's definitely the Budweiser Frogs.

Wasn't there a lot of talk going around a little while back about big companies were dropping their SB commercial airtime bids? Something about all the drama with Trump and the kneeling was causing big sponsors to stear clear of it all. I could have sworn that was a really big deal recently. Then again, there's a bizarre story pretty much every single day now, so that could have been last year.

Anyway, I definitely look forward to watching SB commercials. I'm also really, really hoping we get a 2nd Avengers: Endgame trailer. That'd be super sweet.

Not familiar with that. Maybe for some companies. But like for Anhueser-Busch, they have exclusivity rights for all alcohol ads in the Super Bowl right now. So they are definitely doubling down on that window.

I know ratings were down in general last year for NFL games. But this year they shot right back up. And a lot of people are expecting crazy ratings, maybe record breaking ratings for Super Bowl 53.

And yeah, Endgame trailer would be awesome. Seems a perfect opportunity for it to debut.

So do you have a favorite beer ad from any Super Bowl or a brand you are looking forward to seeing this year?

Really, really surprised to see ASMR in a Super Bowl ad. I found out about it years ago and never imagined Michelob Ultra would pay $5 million for a Super Bowl commercial that overtly features ASMR. So this becomes one of the most unique beer ads I've ever seen.

Here's the wiki definition of it, thought I'd share before I share the ad in case you've never come across this on YouTube or online before:

Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is an experience characterized by a static-like or tingling sensation on the skin that typically begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine. It has been compared with auditory-tactile synesthesia and may overlap with frisson.

I have experienced frisson before listening to music several times (basically chills from listening to music) but never knew the name until I found an article one day. And that led me to ASMR, which is its own cool but weird YouTube rabbit hole on its own.

Zoƫ Kravitz does have a perfect voice for ASMR and this ad. Check it out, lemme know what everyone thinks:

That's a really cool one. Mostly because it's truly an original mechanism to use in this way, but also because it's somewhat interactive. And yeah, the YouTube ASMR rabbit hole get very strange, very quickly..
