Why is college basketball still going on?

I straight up think continuing to play any sport right now is madness. For some reason I feel more for college players. Part of me feels like they don't have much of a choice but to play for fear they'll lose future opportunities. Schools still try to forcibly push their seasons into fruition, and I ask "at what cost?" The almighty dollar is running the show, and it's obvious. Just hear what some college coaches are saying.

“I don’t think it feels right to anybody. I mean, everyone is concerned. I would just like for the safety, the mental and physical health of players and staff, to assess where we’re at. You have 2,000 deaths a day. You have 200,000 cases. People are saying the next six weeks are going to be the worst. To me, it's already pretty bad. On the other side of it, there are these vaccines that are coming out. By the end of the month, 20 million vaccine shots will be given. By the end of January or in February, another 100 million. Should we not reassess that? And see just what would be best? I know somebody will take what I’m saying tonight and make it like I’m making excuses. I don’t make excuses."

Duke men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski

Iona men’s coach Rick Pitino tweeted, “Save the Season. Move the start back. Play league schedule and have May Madness. Spiking and protocols make it impossible to play right now.”

I'm glad there are coaches and staff voicing their opinions. Hopefully this will invoke change.

They are playing because all the sports are playing. I think its as simple as that. I think this because if no other sport was playing, they wouldn't be either.

That said, they are fighting an uphill battle. A combo of TV contracts, coaches and players wanting to play, coaches and players getting sick, fans vs no fans in the arenas, and on and on. It would certainly be easier to just call it off for a few months. But even doing that would cause scheduling problems down the road.

I think postponing a few weeks or month is a good idea, and aiming for May vs March Madness. I don't think they should have to shut the whole season down though. Sure its irritating and confusing, with games being cancelled or ppd every day, but it's doable.

I think they should shut it all down until further notice. We need to remind ourselves that sports is entertainment, it's not essential business. It should be a no-brainer not to risk public health for games.
