New Playoff Format Means Every NBA East Team Has a Shot at the Postseason

The NBA made a major change to their playoff format this year and it won't be felt any more acutely than in the Eastern Conference. The new format does away with automatically giving each division champion a spot in the playoffs and instead awards the teams with the best eight records in each conference a spot. So in a conference that is really wide open, outside of the Cav's, every single team has a legitimate shot at making the playoffs.

I think the clear favorites to make the playoffs in the East this season are the Cav's, Bulls, and Hawks. After that, I think the final five spots are anybody's guess. Every other team really isn't that good (or bad) enough for me to be able to rank them for the final five spots.

And that's what's sad about the Eastern Conference. They are almost like the JV Conference when put up against the far more dominant Western Conference. A team from the East has only won five of the past fifteen NBA Championships and I just don't see that changing anytime soon. The new playoff format might change who gets to play in the postseason, but it isn't going to do anything to change the dynamics of the league.

So this is very interesting to me. Smart, I think. One question I have though is are they going to change the way they schedule games in general now to go along with this, so that teams play everyone in the league more evenly, instead of having more inter-divisional games than with any other division?

Maybe that's worded wrong. Lemme try that again.. do you know if they are going to change the way they schedule games to have every team play every other team in the conference as evenly as possible, instead of having them play more games within their division than outside of it, like before?

It's about time. I have been wanting the league to do this for like the past 5 years. The West will also be quite effected by this too.
